History

Sun Temple, Konark (2)

The Sun Temple was built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty around the year 1250 AD. The king built this temple as a sign of victory and power, and to worship the Sun God.

The temple was constructed using black granite stones, which gave it the name “Black Pagoda” by European sailors. Over time, the main sanctum collapsed, but the remaining parts still show the brilliance of Kalinga-style architecture.

This temple is also linked to many legends, including one that says it was completed by a 12-year-old boy named Dharmapada who sacrificed his life to save the workers.
