History

Jirang Buddhist Monastery (2)

The history of the monastery is closely linked to the arrival of Tibetan refugees in India after the Chinese occupation of Tibet in the 1950s. In 1963, the Government of Odisha gave land at Chandragiri to the Tibetan settlers. This area soon became known as “Mini Tibet” due to the growing Tibetan population and their preserved culture.

In 2010, the construction of the Padmasambhava Mahavihara Monastery was completed. It was inaugurated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who visited the site and blessed the place. Since then, the monastery has served as a center for Buddhist learning, housing hundreds of monks and students studying Buddhist philosophy and teachings.
