History
The story behind Sakhigopal Temple is one of devotion and divine justice. It is believed that a poor Brahmin and a wealthy man once went on a pilgrimage to Vrindavan. During the journey, the Brahmin helped the rich man with great care. Touched by his kindness, the rich man promised to marry his daughter to the Brahmin.
Later, after returning to the village, the rich man broke his promise. When the Brahmin asked for proof, Lord Krishna, who was worshipped in Vrindavan as Gopal, agreed to become a witness (sakhi) to the truth. Gopal followed the Brahmin all the way from Vrindavan to Odisha under the condition that the Brahmin must not look back during the journey. However, near Satyabadi, the Brahmin turned around, and Lord Gopal chose to stay there.
This story is the foundation of the temple, and the idol worshipped here is believed to have walked from Vrindavan. The temple received royal patronage, especially during the time of the Gajapati rulers of Odisha.
